In Memory of Iryna Zarutska by Debbie Harris

Tags

The poem is a tribute to Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee and artist who fled Kyiv in 2022 with her family, seeking safety in the United States. It celebrates her vibrant life, talents in art restoration, and aspirations to become a veterinarian, while highlighting her kindness and adaptability in Charlotte, North Carolina. Tragically, Iryna was fatally stabbed in an unprovoked attack on August 22, 2025, aboard a Charlotte Blue Line train by a homeless man with a violent history. The poem mourns her loss, critiques systemic failures in safety and mental health, and honors her enduring spirit, vowing to keep her memory alive in the fight for justice and change.

From Kyiv’s shadowed streets, where war’s cruel thunder roared,
You fled the flames of home, seeking shores unexplored.
With mother, sister, brother, in 2022’s grim flight,
To America’s embrace, you turned toward the light.

A gifted artist born, with brush and heart so true,
Restorer of the faded, maker of dreams anew.
At Synergy College, your talents brightly shone,
Then to Rowan-Cabarrus, where new paths were sown.

Fluent in a foreign tongue, you danced with words so free,
At Zepeddie’s Pizzeria, serving smiles with glee.
A lover of all creatures, walking neighbors’ pets with grace,
Dreaming of vet’s white coat, in this vast, new space.

Yet on that fateful evening, August twenty-second’s eve,
Aboard the Blue Line’s carriage, fate would not believe.
In Charlotte’s humming rails, under South End’s neon glow,
You boarded unaware, where shadows steal the show.

Khaki pants and dark shirt, hat from work tucked neat,
Phone in hand, you settled in an empty seat.
Behind you sat the darkness, a man with fractured mind,
Homeless wanderer, unchecked, of a violent kind.

Four minutes passed in silence, then the blade flashed cold and swift,
Three strikes to tender throat—your life, a thief would lift.
Unprovoked, unyielding, in a random surge of night,
You collapsed amid the stunned, into eternal flight.

Oh, Iryna, radiant soul, whose smile lit every room,
From Ukraine’s resilient fields to this untimely tomb.
Your family mourns across the waves—father left behind,
By war’s unyielding chains, unable to unwind.

The world now rages at the system’s hollow core,
A suspect with a history, free to strike once more.
Calls for justice echo, from halls of power high,
Debates on safety, mental health, beneath the grieving sky.

But in your honor, we remember not the blade’s cruel art,
But the passion in your canvas, the warmth within your heart.
Rest now, brave refugee, in peace you’ve truly earned,
Your light endures, a beacon, in the lessons we’ve all learned.

May your spirit wander free, through fields of endless green,
Where animals await your care, and art flows like a stream.
Iryna Zarutska, forever young, forever bright—
In tribute, we vow: your story fuels the fight.

Lament Against the Christ-less Cruelty of Humanity in All Its Many Forms by Debbie Harris

The poem, titled “Lament Against the Cruelty of Humanity in All Its Many Forms”, expresses deep sorrow over humanity’s various acts of cruelty, from hatred and war to the suffering of the innocent. It portrays a shared grief between the speaker and God, who both mourn the pain inflicted by selfish and malicious actions. The poem highlights the divine call for redemption and love, despite humanity’s persistent cruelty, and questions whether people will heed this call or continue causing anguish. It concludes with a unified lament for the loss of compassion and the hope for change.

Oh, how the heart of heaven weeps,
For cruelty in humanity creeps.
In shadows cast by selfish hands,
The wounds of malice scar the lands.

From whispered hate to wars that roar,
The innocent are crushed, ignored.
The child’s cry, the widow’s pain,
The blood that spills like bitter rain.

God’s eyes, they glimmer, heavy, sore,
Grieving for the world He bore.
Each act of spite, each heart grown cold,
A story of His love untold.

Yet still He calls through endless night,
With mercy soft as morning light.
“Turn from the dark, embrace the true,
My heart, like yours, breaks for you.”

But will we hear? Will we repent?
Or let more tears in anguish vent?
For God and I, we mourn as one,
The cruelty done, the love undone.

Tribute To School Nurses by Debbie Harris

In a bustling school where young hearts race,

You hold the helm if a sacred space.

A tiny room, with Band-aides and care.

A haven for kids when the world’s unfair.

Skinned knees, fevers, or tears that spill,

You meet each child with a healer’s skill.

A gentle word, a cool cloth’s grace,

You mend their hearts, you soothe their face.

From playground tumbles to anxious days,

You know the signs, you read their ways

With high fives for bravery, a steady hand,

You teach them trust in a world unplanned.

No spotlight shines on your quiet heart.

Yet you build hope in each young heart!

School Nurse, you’re the calm in their storm’s embrace,

Growing bright futures with live and grace!

The poem draws from 2 Corinthians 4:18, emphasizing a Christ-centered focus on eternal realities over fleeting earthly things. It portrays the world’s temporary allure as fragile and fading, contrasting it with the enduring, unseen glory of Jesus Christ. Through vivid imagery, the poem highlights Christ’s eternal kingdom, His sacrificial love, and His unchanging presence as the anchor of faith. It invites believers to fix their gaze on Jesus, the crucified and risen Savior, whose grace and truth shine beyond the temporal veil, offering hope and eternal life.

Beyond the veil of earthly sight,
Where fleeting shadows dim the light,
We fix our gaze on Christ alone,
The King eternal, God’s own Son.

The world’s frail charms, though bright they seem,
Are but a breath, a passing dream.
Its treasures fade, its glories cease,
But Christ endures, our Prince of Peace.

Unseen, yet real, His kingdom stands,
Its truth upheld by nail-scarred hands.
His love, a fire that never wanes,
Outshines the stars, forever reigns.

In Him, the unseen becomes our home,
Through faith we see where angels roam.
No temporal veil can hide His face,
His cross our anchor, His heart our place.

O Christ, our hope, exquisite, true,
Your boundless grace comes shining through.
Eternal Lord, our eyes abide,
On You, the Life, the Crucified.

When Someone Seeks To Bless Someone Through Pride by Debbie Harris

When someone seeks

to bless another by

saying God has blessed

me and so I want to bless

you, but shames the

receiver in that they

treat them as not as

blessed as the giver,

this is a grievous sin

against God and the

recipient of the so

called gift! Such pride

in giving God will despise!
