“Sonnets Urging the Soul to Forget Not the Endless Benefits Bestowed by Christ Our Risen Lord” is a vibrant set of 10 Shakespearean sonnets that call the soul to remember and rejoice in the manifold blessings poured out by Jesus Christ, the Risen Lord. Drawing from Psalm 103:2’s exhortation, the series celebrates 10 distinct benefits—forgiveness, healing, redemption, peace, strength, guidance, love, provision, hope, and eternal life—each a testament to Christ’s boundless love and redemptive power. With a tone of gratitude and awe, these sonnets urge believers to never forget the gifts bestowed through His sacrifice and resurrection, weaving a poetic anthem of praise that spans earthly struggles to eternal glory.

  1. Forgiveness of Sins: Christ’s blood washes away guilt, a grace that frees us from sin’s chains.
  2. Healing of the Soul: His mercy mends inner wounds, restoring wholeness through love.
  3. Redemption from Death: His resurrection defeats the grave, granting life beyond mortality.
  4. Peace Beyond Understanding: Christ’s calm steadies us amidst chaos, a transcendent refuge.
  5. Strength in Weakness: His power lifts the frail, turning weakness into divine might.
  6. Guidance Through Life: His truth lights our path, leading us safely through the dark.
  7. Love Unfailing: Christ’s eternal love endures, a steadfast bond no trial can break.
  8. Provision Abundant: His hand supplies every need, a bounty echoing His miracles.
  9. Hope Everlasting: His promise kindles hope, a light beyond this fading world.
  10. Eternal Life: Christ’s victory gifts us endless days, a crown of life with Him forever.

Themes and Tone

The series is a Christ-centered celebration, with each sonnet spotlighting a benefit tied to His cross, resurrection, and lordship. Imagery—blood, light, streams, crowns—paints a vivid, timeless picture of His goodness, free of dated elements. The tone is urgent yet joyful, blending a Psalmist’s plea (“forget not”) with exultant praise, urging the soul to dwell on Christ’s endless gifts. It’s personal and cosmic, a call to gratitude that resonates through every line.

Purpose

These sonnets are a poetic wake-up call—to bless the Lord by recalling His benefits, rooted in Christ’s saving work. They stir the heart to worship, ensuring His blessings—earned by Him, not us—stay ever in mind, fueling faith and joy from forgiveness to eternity.

Sonnets Urging the Soul to Forget Not the Endless Benefits Bestowed by Christ Our Risen Lord

Sonnet I: Forgiveness of Sins

Forget not He who bore our every stain,
Christ’s blood a flood to wash our guilt away,
On Calvary’s hill, He broke sin’s iron chain,
And turned our night to mercy’s boundless day.
No debt remains where love hath paid the price,
His grace doth cleanse what justice would condemn,
Through sacrifice, He bids the soul arise,
A benefit from Him, our diadem.
The past, once dark, now fades beneath His gaze,
A pardon flows from hands once nailed and torn,
This gift of peace through all our fleeting days,
Doth prove His love for sinners newly born.
O Redeemer, Thou who sets the captive free,
Thy benefit of grace abides with me.

Sonnet II: Healing of the Soul

Forget not He who heals the heart’s deep woe,
Christ’s touch a balm for wounds no eye can see,
Through love divine, His mercy doth bestow,
A wholeness wrought by Him who died for me.
The scars of sin, the grief that once held sway,
Are mended by the Savior’s gentle care,
His voice doth bid our sorrows flee away,
A benefit of healing we now share.
No pain too vast for His redeeming hand,
He binds the broken with His tender might,
This grace restores where mortal strength once banned,
And lifts the soul to dwell in endless light.
O Living Lord, whose power doth renew,
Thy benefit of health flows ever true.

Sonnet III: Redemption from Death

Forget not He who conquered death’s cold reign,
Christ rose alive, the grave’s dark victory lost,
His triumph broke the shroud of mortal pain,
And paid our ransom at unmeasured cost.
The sting of death, once fierce, now lies subdued,
His resurrection grants us life anew,
A benefit through love so vast imbued,
That hell itself cannot our souls pursue.
From dust to glory, He hath paved the way,
A promise sealed by blood and empty tomb,
This gift eternal shines through every day,
Dispelling fear with Heaven’s radiant bloom.
O Redeemer, Thou who lives to save,
Thy benefit redeems beyond the grave.

Sonnet IV: Peace Beyond Understanding

Forget not He who calms the storm within,
Christ’s peace a gift no tempest can unmake,
Amidst life’s wars, His love doth yet begin,
A stillness deep for every soul to take.
The world may rage, its chaos press us sore,
Yet in His heart, a quiet refuge lies,
This benefit doth steady us once more,
A tranquil stream beneath His watchful eyes.
No fear can hold where He hath spoken rest,
His voice subdues the tumult of our care,
Through trials fierce, this blessing we attest,
A peace divine beyond what words can bear.
O Living Lord, whose calm doth all transcend,
Thy benefit of peace shall never end.

Sonnet V: Strength in Weakness

Forget not He who lifts us when we fall,
Christ’s strength a boon to frail and faltering frame,
In weakness dire, His power doth forestall,
The collapse of hope beneath life’s heavy claim.
Our might may fade, yet His endures supreme,
A benefit to bear us through the fight,
Through Him, we rise on mercy’s flowing stream,
And stand anew in His sustaining light.
The burden shared, the yoke made soft and sweet,
His grace empowers where our own doth cease,
This gift of fortitude our hearts replete,
A strength divine that bids all strife release.
O Redeemer, Thou who aids the meek,
Thy benefit upholds the frail and weak.

Sonnet VI: Guidance Through Life

Forget not He who lights our wandering way,
Christ’s truth a lamp to guide through darkest vale,
His wisdom shines where shadows hold their sway,
A benefit that bids us never fail.
The path unknown, the steps we dare not tread,
Are charted by His ever-steady hand,
Through doubt and fear, His voice hath gently led,
To bring us safe to Canaan’s promised land.
No maze too vast, no night too deep to roam,
His counsel steers where mortal sight grows dim,
This gift doth lead us ever nearer home,
A shepherd’s care bestowed by love from Him.
O Living Lord, whose word doth all direct,
Thy benefit of guidance doth protect.

Sonnet VII: Love Unfailing

Forget not He whose love shall never wane,
Christ’s heart a flame that burns through every age,
No height nor depth can sever mercy’s reign,
A benefit inscribed on Heaven’s page.
When all else fades, His care remains secure,
A steadfast vow no sin can e’er undo,
Through trials fierce, this love doth yet endure,
A bond eternal, boundless, ever true.
The cross doth prove His passion for our sake,
A gift unearned, yet freely He bestows,
This love doth heal where hearts in silence break,
And blooms where mortal kindness never grows.
O Redeemer, Thou whose love prevails,
Thy benefit of grace forever sails.

Sonnet VIII: Provision Abundant

Forget not He who feeds the hungry soul,
Christ’s hand a source of bounty unforeseen,
With bread of life, He makes the spirit whole,
A benefit where want hath never been.
The loaves He broke, the fish He multiplied,
Still echo in the gifts we daily find,
His care supplies where need hath once decried,
A lavish grace to nourish humankind.
No lack too great for Him who fills our days,
His providence doth flow from Heaven’s store,
This blessing meets us in a thousand ways,
A table spread with riches evermore.
O Living Lord, who gives beyond our plea,
Thy benefit sustains abundantly.

Sonnet IX: Hope Everlasting

Forget not He who plants a living hope,
Christ’s promise gleams beyond this fleeting sphere,
Through darkest hours, His light doth yet elope,
A benefit to banish every fear.
The world may fade, its glories turn to dust,
Yet in His word, a future bright is sown,
This grace uplifts where mortals place their trust,
A star to guide us to His holy throne.
No grief can quench the vision He imparts,
A dawn assured where shadows have no reign,
This hope renews the weary, faithful hearts,
A gift of joy through all that yet remain.
O Redeemer, Thou who hope doth frame,
Thy benefit endures through endless fame.

Sonnet X: Eternal Life

Forget not He who grants us life to come,
Christ’s victory crowns the soul with endless days,
Beyond the grave, His love doth overcome,
A benefit that echoes in His praise.
The sting of death, the tomb’s unyielding hold,
Are vanquished by the One who rose again,
Through Him, we gain a heritage untold,
A home where sin and sorrow ne’er attain.
This gift supreme, the crown of all His care,
Doth lift us up to dwell where angels sing,
Eternal life, His promise we now share,
A ceaseless reign with Christ, our risen King.
O Living Lord, whose heart doth all bestow,
Thy benefit of life forever flows.

The sonnet explores the transformative power of being born again, depicting it as a spiritual awakening that frees the soul from darkness and ignorance. Initially blind to divine truth, the soul is lost in sin until a heavenly call sparks a rebirth. This renewal lifts the veil of obscurity, allowing light to flood in and reveal God’s sacred wisdom. Guided by the Word, the reborn spirit gains clear vision, leaving behind its old limitations to rest in Christ’s grace and perceive eternal truth.

In shadows deep, the soul stumbles and strays,
Till heaven’s voice ignites a second birth,
A spark divine that sets the heart ablaze,
And lifts the veil from eyes to see true worth.
The darkened gaze can’t breach the haze of sin,
Nor flesh alone unlock the sacred lore,
But born anew, the light comes rushing in,
And shows the soul what it had missed before.
The Word springs forth, a beacon clear and bright,
Each line a flame to guide the spirit’s quest,
The old life fades, eclipsed by boundless sight,
In Christ reborn, the weary find their rest.
Through this new birth, our vision is unbound,
To see His truth where grace and glory sound.

This six-line poem begins with a rhetorical question, marveling at how one cannot help but rise on magnificent wings with Jesus Christ as King nearby. It then portrays His love as a force that soars through life’s challenges, offering limitless grace as a beacon. The poem concludes with a direct challenge to the soul to actively rise in faith, promising an eternal expanse of divine skies. It’s a compact, uplifting celebration of spiritual elevation through Christ’s presence and power.

How can we not rise, on wings so grand,
With Jesus Christ, our King, at hand?
Through storms and skies, His love takes flight,
A boundless grace, our guiding light,
Take flight, O soul, in faith ascend,
His boundless skies shall never end.

The sonnet portrays a small lamb standing on a hill at dusk, its fleece glowing as it looks to its shepherd for direction. With trusting eyes, the lamb seeks guidance through the vast, shadowy fields ahead, relying on the shepherd’s staff to lead it to safety or peace. Unfazed by potential dangers or uncertainties, the lamb follows faithfully, its gentle bleats asking what lies next, content to go wherever the shepherd directs.

A little lamb stands soft upon the hill,
Its fleece aglow beneath the fading day,
With tender eyes it seeks the shepherd’s will,
To know the path through dusk’s uncertain play.
The fields stretch wide, a sea of green and gold,
Yet shadows creep where hidden streams may run,
The lamb, so small, in trust both meek and bold,
Looks up to him who guards ‘gainst setting sun.
The staff he holds, a beacon calm and sure,
Points forth where grazing peace or shelter waits,
Through storm or stillness, danger or allure,
The lamb steps on, content with shepherd’s gates.
In every bleat, a question softly sings,
“What’s next, my guide?”—and follows where he brings.

From Ancient Signs to Modern Peaks: The Eternal Reach of Belief by Debbie Harris

The sonnet challenges the notion that miracles are confined to history, asserting that God’s power remains active today for those with faith. It recalls past wonders—like parted seas and healed lives—as evidence of divine might that persists unchanged. The poem emphasizes that believers can still command mountains to move, as Jesus taught, and see the impossible yield to steadfast trust. It celebrates the continuity of God’s miracles, urging the faithful to embrace this living power and witness its effects in the present.

Why banish wonders to the days of old,
When God, unchanging, holds His power still?
For those who trust, His marvels yet unfold,
Through faith, we bend the mountains to His will.
The past recounts the seas that split in twain,
The blind made whole, the dead restored to breath,
Yet now, as then, His might does not wane,
For belief unlocks the chains of death.
“Be gone!” we cry to peaks that block our way,
And stone must yield to words of steadfast heart,
The Lord, who spoke the stars to light the day,
Still bids the impossible depart.
So let us claim the miracles anew,
For God’s great works shine forth to faithful view.

Meditations on the Transience of Riches and the Eternity of Grace by Debbie Harris

The sonnet urges the wealthy to reject arrogance and reliance on their uncertain riches, which can vanish like the wind. Instead, it encourages them to place their hope in God, who generously provides all things for true enjoyment. It contrasts the fleeting nature of material wealth with the enduring treasure of faith, calling the rich to humility and trust in divine grace as the source of lasting fulfillment.

The rich who tread this fleeting world below,
With coffers full, are bid to shun their pride,
For gold, though bright, doth shift like winds that blow,
And in its gleam, no lasting hope abide.
Let not their hearts exalt in hoarded store,
Nor cling to wealth, that fickle friend of chance,
But turn their gaze to Him who giveth more,
Whose boundless grace doth earthly gifts enhance.
For God, in love, provides our every need,
A fount of joy that never runs to dust,
And bids us sow with kind and humble deed,
To find in Him a treasure we can trust.
So let the rich, with meekness as their crown,
Hold fast to faith, where truest wealth is found.

Beneath the Gilded Frame of Wealth and Pride by Debbie Harris

This sonnet, “Beneath the Gilded Frame of Wealth and Pride,” reflects on the arrival of a wealthy man in a community, adorned with dazzling riches and commanding attention. It questions whether one should be swayed by his material splendor or look deeper to his true character. While wealth may shine brightly, it is fleeting, and pride, not money, often blocks spiritual fulfillment. The sonnet urges judgment based not on transient treasures but on acts of grace, concluding that a person’s worth lies beyond what they possess—humble deeds endure where pride and boldness fade.

If in your midst a rich man should appear,
With gold and silks to dazzle every eye,
His voice commanding all who linger near,
His wealth a tower reaching to the sky—
Would you, in awe, his every word obey,
Or see the heart beneath the gilded frame?
For riches gleam, yet often fade away,
While humble souls may bear a truer name.
The camel threads no needle’s narrow gate,
Yet pride, not coin, may bar the heav’nly door—
So judge him not by treasure’s fleeting weight,
But by the grace his actions may restore.
A man is more than what his hands can hold,
For humble deeds outlast the proud and bold.

Lest the Martyrs Fade from Memory (Hebrews 11, Revelation 6:9-11) by Debbie Harris

The sonnet “Lest the Martyrs Fade from Memory (Hebrews 11, Revelation 6:9-11)” is a Shakespearean poem (ABAB CDCD EFEF GG rhyme scheme, iambic pentameter) that honors the enduring legacy of faith’s martyrs, past and present, while lamenting the risk of their being forgotten, inspired by Hebrews 11 (the “hall of faith”) and Revelation 6:9-11 (martyrs under the altar). The first quatrain recalls the blood of ancient martyrs and those slain today, their voices forming a timeless chorus of courage. The second quatrain contrasts historical persecutions—flames and lions—with modern trials of steel and scorn, affirming that both shine under heaven’s watch, their spirits upheld eternally. The third quatrain notes the world’s forgetfulness, yet celebrates the martyrs’ ongoing sacrifice as a defiant, radiant band across time. The final couplet urges remembrance of their undying call to stand, proclaiming their victorious shine in heaven’s eternal land. Written without first-person references, the sonnet blends reflection with triumph, uniting past and present martyrs in a call to honor their steadfast faith.

The blood of old lies deep within the ground,
Yet still today brave souls for faith are slain,
Their voices past and present yet resound,
A chorus bold through time’s unbroken chain.
The ancients faced the flame, the lion’s jaw,
While now the steel and scorn cut just as deep,
Both eras shine where heaven’s gaze foresaw,
Their spirits rise where sacred vigils keep.
The world forgets, its haste obscures their stand,
From martyrs old to those this hour confess,
Their sacrifice ascends, a timeless band,
Defies the dark with light that none repress.
Let ages hear their undying call to stand,
Faith’s martyrs shine in heaven’s eternal land!

The sonnet, titled “The Savior’s Kingdom Stands Unshaken (Hebrews 12:28),” is a Shakespearean poem (ABAB CDCD EFEF GG rhyme scheme, iambic pentameter) that celebrates the unshakable kingdom of the Savior amidst a perpetually shaken world, inspired by Hebrews 12:28: “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken…” (NIV). The first quatrain contrasts the world’s raging chaos with Christ’s steadfast domain, a kingdom immune to fear and time’s decay. The second quatrain depicts the earth’s instability—empires falling and shadows fading—against the enduring light and strength of the Savior’s reign. The third quatrain emphasizes His sovereign seat’s resilience, offering unbreakable peace and eternal might despite worldly strife. The final couplet proclaims the triumph of His throne over transient ruins, affirming its growing glory. Written without first-person references, the sonnet exalts the Savior’s kingdom as an unshakable refuge, fulfilling the biblical promise with a victorious tone.

The world reels wild, its tempests fiercely rage,
Yet Christ’s domain defies all quaking dread,
His kingdom towers firm through every age,
A rock where mortal tumult finds no tread.
The earth convulses, empires crack and sway,
While shadows flee before His steady light,
The Savior’s reign holds fast through storm and fray,
Its might unshaken, boundless in its height.
Though chaos grips the lands with ceaseless woe,
His sovereign seat remains forever sure,
No power breaks the peace His rule bestow,
Eternal strength in Him shall long endure.
Let trembling realms their fragile ruin know,
The Savior’s throne stands firm, His glories grow!

The sonnet “O Church of Acts, Arise Anew” is a Shakespearean poem (ABAB CDCD EFEF GG rhyme scheme, iambic pentameter) that expresses a triumphant longing for the revival of churches mirroring the vibrant, unified communities of the Book of Acts, particularly Acts 2:42-47. The first quatrain evokes a Spirit-filled past where believers united in prayer and shared all things with joy. The second quatrain portrays a community alive with truth, communal meals, and awe-inspiring signs, bound by a singular faith. The third quatrain voices a yearning for this model to spread globally, breaking down greed and illuminating the world with hope. The final couplet envisions a victorious resurgence, calling for unity and glory to mark the church’s rise. Written without first-person references, it celebrates the Acts ideal as a timeless aspiration for renewal and strength.

The Spirit wakes, a fire from ancient days,
Where souls entwine in love and ceaseless prayer,
A band unites, their hearts in bold displays,
To hold all goods as one, with joy to share.
The truth rings out through voices raised in praise,
The table spreads, with grace for all to claim,
Signs gleam afresh, igniting awestruck gaze,
One faith binds all beneath a common flame.
The world awaits this vision to restore,
Where walls of greed dissolve in boundless care,
A fellowship to bloom from shore to shore,
A light to pierce the dark with hope so rare.
Let echoes swell, let unity take flight,
The church shall rise in glory and in might!
