Villanelle: I, The Lord, Will Refresh The Weary With My Care And Crown The Saint With Light by Debbie Harris

This 19-line villanelle, spoken in the voice of Christ, promises divine renewal and fulfillment. Through five tercets and a concluding quatrain, it repeats two refrains: “I, the Lord, will refresh the weary soul” and “And fill the saint with blessings rare and whole.” Christ vows to lift the burdened and broken—those sinking under tolls, dwelling in cold depths, or scarred beyond repair—offering them mercy, peace, and consolation amidst life’s tempests. Simultaneously, He pledges to bless the righteous and humble with grace and wholeness, using vivid imagery like springs, tides, and dawn. The poem culminates in an invitation to take His hand, uniting the lost and the righteous in His embrace, as reflected in Jeremiah 31:25 (“I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint”) and Matthew 5:6 (“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled”).

For I have satiated the weary soul, and I have replenished every sorrowful soul.

Jeremiah 31:25 (KJV)

I, the Lord, will refresh the weary soul,
Through shadowed vales where broken hearts abide,
And fill the saint with blessings rare and whole.

The heavy-laden sink beneath their toll,
Shall find my spring of mercy flowing wide,
I, the Lord, will refresh the weary soul.

The humble lift their pleas from depths so cold,
My grace shall rise like dawn at eventide,
And fill the saint with blessings rare and whole.

No tempest breaks the spirit I control,
For peace and strength in my embrace collide,
I, the Lord, will refresh the weary soul.

The scarred and fallen, I shall yet console,
My gentle tide shall lift them to my side,
And fill the saint with blessings rare and whole.

Come, grasp my hand, let burdens lose their hold,
In me, the lost and righteous shall reside—
I, the Lord, will refresh the weary soul,
And fill the saint with blessings rare and whole.

1. The Eternal Flame

YHWH – “I AM” (Exodus 3:14)

In desert flame, He spoke His name,
“I AM” the voice eternal came,
No start, no end, His being flows,
Through time and dust, His presence grows.

2. The Shaper of Skies

Elohim – Creator God (Genesis 1:1)

Elohim shaped the void to form,
The heavens birthed in chaos’ storm,
With word alone, He lit the skies,
And land from sea in might did rise.

3. The Sovereign Crown

Adonai – Lord/Master (Psalm 8:1)

Adonai reigns, the Lord on high,
His glory crowns the earth and sky,
All knees shall bend, all tongues confess,
His mastery in righteousness.

4. The Mighty Promise

El Shaddai – God Almighty (Genesis 17:1)

El Shaddai, the strength untold,
In Abram’s age, His promise bold,
A nation vast from one man’s line,
Almighty power, pure divine.

5. The Ram on the Hill

Jehovah-Jireh – The Lord Will Provide (Genesis 22:14)

Jehovah-Jireh, on the hill,
A ram for Isaac, mercy still,
He sees the need, His hand supplies,
Provision falls from faithful skies.

6. The Calm in the Storm

Jehovah-Shalom – The Lord Is Peace (Judges 6:24)

Jehovah-Shalom, calm restored,
To Gideon’s fear, a gentle word,
In battle’s din, His peace takes root,
A quiet strength, a sure pursuit.

7. The Fire of Zeal

Qanna – Jealous God (Exodus 34:14)

Qanna burns with holy flame,
A jealous God, He guards His name,
No idol stands, no rival thrives,
His love consumes where sin connives.

8. The Unshaken Stone

Rock – (Deuteronomy 32:4)

The Rock stands firm, no storm can sway,
His justice holds through night and day,
A shelter strong, a steady base,
Unshaken in His righteous grace.

9. The Eyes of Mercy

El Roi – The God Who Sees (Genesis 16:13)

El Roi beholds the outcast’s cry,
In Hagar’s flight, His watchful eye,
No tear escapes, no pain unseen,
His gaze a balm where hope has been.

10. The Branch of Grace

Jehovah-Tsidkenu – The Lord Our Righteousness (Jeremiah 23:6)

Jehovah-Tsidkenu shall reign,
Our righteousness through sin’s dark stain,
A branch of grace, a kingly rod,
He cloaks us pure before our God.

The Still Small Voice

And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?

The sonnet, inspired by 1 Kings 19:11-13 (KJV), describes Elijah’s encounter with God on Mount Horeb. It vividly portrays a fierce wind tearing mountains apart, a mighty earthquake shaking the earth, and a blazing fire consuming all—yet God’s voice is absent from these dramatic forces. Instead, after the chaos, a “still small voice” emerges in a tranquil hush, calling to Elijah as he stands at the cave’s steep entrance. The poem concludes that God’s will is revealed not in storms, but in the softest, most subtle sound, affirming His sovereign presence.

The wind arose, a tempest fierce and wild,
It tore the mountains, shattered stone to dust,
Yet in its roar, no holy word compiled,
For God withheld His voice from tempest’s thrust.

An earthquake shook the earth with trembling might,
A fire blazed, consuming all in flame,
But neither bore the whisper of His light,
No sacred truth within their chaos came.

Then silence fell, a hush upon the air,
A still small voice, so faint, yet piercing deep,
It called to Elijah, standing there,
A gentle breath where mortal souls might creep.

In quietude, not storm, His will is known,
The softest sound reveals His sovereign throne.

The poem portrays healing as a gift of grace, achieved through a single word from Christ, triggered by the royal faith of prayer, which restores the sick with divine power.

When healing grace alone can mend the frail,
One word from Christ, and all is set aright,
A royal faith in prayer shall prevail,
The sick restored by Heaven’s boundless might.

The Singular Path To Redemption by Debbie Harris

The sonnet explores the exclusivity of the gospel, presenting it as a singular, unwavering path to salvation through Jesus Christ. Amid a world of competing voices and diverse roads, the poem asserts that only one name and one way—Christ’s—offers true redemption. Though this narrow claim faces scorn for its perceived rigidity, the poem reveals a deeper grace within it: a bold, divine love that illuminates the darkness and leads to eternal peace for those who follow.

Through Christ Alone
Amid the voices clamoring for sway,
A single path emerges, sharp and clear,
Through shadowed vales where lost souls seek their way,
One name alone resounds for hearts to hear.
The world delights in roads of varied hue,
Each promising a summit of its own,
Yet steadfast stands the gospel’s narrow view,
A gate through which the Savior’s light is shown.
What scorn it draws from minds that crave no bound,
What whispers call it harsh, unyielding, cold—
But in its claim a deeper grace is found,
A love that pierced the dark with truth so bold.
For though the way be lone, its end is sure,
In Christ, the heart finds peace forever pure.

The poem, “The Gift of Another Day to Serve the Lord”, portrays sunrise and sunset as sacred moments to honor God. Dawn sparks joyful praise and a connection to His presence, while dusk brings grateful reflection for a day lived in faith. It frames each day as a divine gift for worship and service.

At sunrise, golden praise ascends anew,
Each dawn a hymn to greet the Lord’s embrace,
At sunset, twilight whispers gratitude,
A day well-lived within His boundless grace.

The Jubilant Crowns Of Heaven by Debbie Harris

Title: “Wreath of the Unbroken”

  • Highlights the endurance and unbroken faith of those who earn this crown through trials and martyrdom.

For those who bear the trials of the earth,
The flames of pain, the chains of cruel disdain,
A crown awaits, a token of rebirth,
To soothe the scars and wash away the stain.
Through tempests fierce, their faith did never bend,
Though death itself stood knocking at the gate,
Their love for Him held steadfast to the end,
A victor’s prize beyond all mortal hate.
No sword can dim the light within their soul,
Nor grief erase the promise they embrace,
For Heaven crafts this wreath to make them whole,
A radiant band of everlasting grace.
This Crown of Life, to martyrs gently given,
Adorns the brave who fought their way to Heaven.

The Crown of Righteousness

Title: “Garland of the Watchful”

  • Emphasizes the vigilant, hopeful waiting of the righteous for Christ’s return.

The righteous soul, with eyes on distant skies,
Awaits the Lord with every breath and prayer,
No worldly lure can dim its hopeful cries,
For purity becomes its garments fair.
Through days of toil, it walked a narrow road,
Unswayed by sin, unbowed by fleeting gain,
Each step a seed of holiness bestowed,
Each thought a shield against the tempter’s reign.
The trumpet sounds, the Savior splits the air,
And those who longed shall see His face at last,
A crown shall gleam where once was only care,
A righteous wreath for futures now made past.
To those who ran with love until the end,
This crown shall shine where time and tears transcend.

The Crown of Glory

Title: “Circlet of the Shepherd”

  • Captures the pastoral care and leadership tied to this crown, bestowed by the Chief Shepherd.

The shepherd tends his flock with tender hand,
Through storm and dark, he leads with humble might,
His voice a balm across a weary land,
His staff a guide to bring them to the light.
No pride he seeks, no treasure but their peace,
He bears their woe, their burdens all his own,
With every tear, his gentle cares increase,
Till Heaven calls him to the Shepherd’s throne.
The Chief Himself, with glory in His gaze,
Shall place this crown upon the faithful brow,
A wreath unfading through eternal days,
Reward for love fulfilled in sacred vow.
This Crown of Glory shines for those who serve,
A shepherd’s prize no honor can deserve.

The Incorruptible Crown

Title: “Victor’s Band Eternal”

  • Reflects the enduring victory and discipline of the spiritual race, contrasting with fleeting earthly rewards.

The runner strives, his sinews taught and strained,
Against the flesh that pulls him to the dust,
With discipline, his spirit is unchained,
His heart a flame that overcomes all rust.
No fading wreath of laurel crowns his head,
Like athletes bound to earth’s decaying cheer,
But gold divine, by higher hands instead,
A prize for those who conquer mortal fear.
Each lust subdued, each vice at last undone,
He runs the race with eyes on boundless skies,
Till at the line, the endless day begun,
A victor’s crown in Heaven’s courts shall rise.
Incorruptible, this garland shall abide,
For those who fought with Christ beside their side.

The Crown of Rejoicing

Title: “Halo of the Sower”

  • Ties to the agricultural imagery of sowing seeds and the joy of reaping souls for Christ.

The sower casts his seed on stony ground,
Yet prays for fruit where barren hearts reside,
His words of truth in darkened souls are found,
Till faith takes root and blooms on every side.
Each one he wins becomes his joyful boast,
A harvest reaped from tears and fervent care,
Their newborn praise ascends to Heaven’s host,
A symphony of grace beyond compare.
No gold he seeks, but souls to call his own,
Their salvation gleams as crowns within his sight,
For in their song, his triumph is made known,
A shared delight in everlasting light.
This Crown of Rejoicing gilds his brow with pride,
Who sowed the word that brought souls to Christ’s side.

The Lions’ Den and Divine Embrace
When shadows roar and lions bare their teeth,
A den of death where mortal strength must fail,
The soul might quake beneath the claws beneath,
Yet faith stands firm where worldly hopes grow pale.
Like Daniel, cast to fate’s unyielding maw,
Surrounded by the hunger of the night,
He found a shield in heaven’s holy law,
A guardian flame that turned the dark to light.
No matter where the lions’ den may lie,
In trials deep or jaws of dread unbound,
God’s hand is near, His mercy hovering nigh,
A whispered peace amid the savage sound.
So trust the One who calms the beastly throng,
For in His care, the weak become the strong.

Sonnet: The Imprecatory Cry For Justice by Debbie Harris

The Cry for Justice
When deeds so vile do stain the soul’s bright thread,
And darkness coils where mercy once held sway,
The heart, in anguish, lifts its voice to dread,
To call down wrath where evil dares to play.
Oh, righteous fire, from heavens high descend,
Let justice pierce the veil of wicked guile,
With thunder’s roar, let broken fates amend,
And purge the stain that festers rank and vile.
Yet in the storm, a whisper softly cries,
A trembling hope that grace might still abide,
For vengeance dwells where mortal judgment lies,
And peace alone can heal the soul inside.
So pray I thus, with fury and with care,
That truth prevail, and love outlast despair.

Biblical Success Beyond The World’s Crown by Debbie Harris

Sonnet: The Measure of True Gain

Success is not in gold or fleeting fame,
But in the heart that heeds the Lord’s command,
A life aligned with His eternal name,
Where faith takes root in soil of promised land.

The world may chase its crowns of hollow cheer,
Yet wisdom whispers through the sacred page,
To seek His will, to hold His presence near,
Outshines the wealth that withers with the age.

For what is gain if soul and truth divide?
The prosperous path is trust through storm and strife,
A quiet strength where humble steps abide.

So let the heart in stillness seek its life,
True victory blooms where God’s own word is sown,
And heaven’s peace becomes the treasure known.
