Sickness Not Always Divine Reproof by Debbie Harris

The sonnet argues that sickness isn’t always a punishment from God. It suggests that while illness can weaken the body, it’s often a natural part of life rather than a sign of divine anger or judgment for sins. The poem acknowledges that chance and circumstance can bring disease, yet faith and grace can still provide comfort and strength, even when the body suffers. Ultimately, it concludes that not every hardship comes as a rebuke from Heaven.

When sickness falls upon the flesh and bone,
It is not always sent as Heaven’s scorn,
A chastisement from God’s eternal throne,
A mark of wrath for sins we’ve idly borne.
The body bends beneath a mortal strain,
A fragile shell in nature’s vast design,
Not every ache is forged in divine pain,
Nor every fever proof of fault divine.
For chance and time may cast their shadowed net,
Through air or blood, unseen, the ill may creep,
Yet faith can hold where reason finds no debt,
In silence, grace attends the soul to keep.
So when the frame grows weak, the spirit sighs,
Not all rebuke descends from watchful skies.

The quatrain, titled “The Redeemed Nation’s Dawn”, is a four-line poem with an ABAB rhyme scheme (morn/sacrifice, reborn/Christ). It depicts a nation overcoming a dark, sorrowful past (“The night of sorrow fades to gentle morn”) through redemption tied to Jesus Christ’s sacrifice (“A people freed by sacred sacrifice”). This leads to a renewal (“From ashes lifts a land anew reborn”) and a triumphant recognition of Christ’s name at the break of a new era (“Its dawn now hails the name of Jesus Christ”). The poem uses imagery of dawn and rebirth to convey hope and spiritual restoration, centering on Christ as the source of the nation’s freedom and sanctity.

The night of sorrow fades to gentle morn,
A people freed by sacred sacrifice,
From ashes lifts a land anew reborn,
Its dawn now hails the name of Jesus Christ.

Sonnet: Wandering Far From The Sacred Word And The Will Of Almighty God by Debbie Harris

A creed emerges, bold yet strangely blind,
Unmoored from God, adrift in human schemes,
His Word, once life, now dust upon the mind,
Discarded for the glitter of new dreams.

No echo of His voice stirs in their song,
The scriptures lie unread, a muted plea,
While hearts, untethered, wander far and long,
From truth divine to hollow vanity.

The name of Christ is carved on empty stone,
A shell of faith, where warmth no longer dwells,
God’s law, a stranger, left to stand alone,
Replaced by noise of self-forged gospel swells.

How far they stray, who shun the sacred cord,
To lose His Word is to forsake the Lord.

The sonnet explores the tension between divine belonging and a world dominated by evil. It begins by depicting the earth as a place shrouded in darkness, influenced by a malevolent force, yet asserts that those who belong to God carry an inner light and truth that protect them. The poem contrasts the pervasive grip of wickedness with the enduring hope and grace granted to the faithful, which allow them to overcome despair and mortality. It acknowledges the visible reign of evil but emphasizes the spiritual transcendence of God’s people, whose strength lies in divine will—a stronghold against sin. The sonnet concludes with a call to stand firm as God’s own, embracing a peace that sustains life eternally amidst worldly conflict.

We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.

I John 5:19 (KJV)

The world beneath a shadowed veil reclines,
Where wicked whispers weave their subtle art,
Yet we, of God, bear light in steadfast lines,
A truth to shield the pure and faithful heart.
The sway of darkness grips the earth’s domain,
Its tendrils coil through every fleeting breath,
But grace divine bestows a bright refrain,
A song of hope that triumphs over death.
Though evil reigns in realms of mortal sight,
Our souls ascend beyond its fleeting reign,
For in His will we find eternal might,
A fortress firm where sin cannot constrain.
So let us stand, God’s own amidst the strife,
And seize His crown, o’er darkness reigning rife.

The poem celebrates the Jewish people as precious to God, enduring through ages of disdain, while condemning antisemitism as a heinous, abominable sin born of demonic hatred. This evil defies God’s covenant with His chosen, yet through Christ’s blood and sacrifice, salvation redeems them, forging an unbreakable bond. The cross triumphs over malice, uniting God’s people with the Son in eternal light, and calls all to reject this vile sin.

The Jewish kin, so precious in His sight,
Endured through ages shadowed by disdain,
Yet demons stir an antisemitic blight,
A heinous sin that stains the soul with pain.
Abominable hate, from hell’s dark core,
Defies the Lord who called them as His own,
Through Christ’s dear blood, salvation’s gift they bore,
A covenant in flesh and spirit sown.
No force of evil rends this holy tie,
For grace redeems what malice seeks to mar,
The cross stands firm, where love will never die,
A light to guide both near and wandering far.
So let us rise, this vile affront to shun,
In Christ, God’s chosen shine as one with Son.

The sonnet “The Eagle’s Ascent on Wings of Sacred Strength” poetically reflects Isaiah 40:31, portraying those who wait on the Lord as recipients of divine renewal. Beneath a vast sky, they offer patient prayers to Christ, their strength restored to rise like eagles on resilient wings. With quiet faith, they ascend beyond earthly struggles, running tirelessly and walking without weakness through life’s challenges. Rich with alliteration, the poem celebrates the enduring power and grace granted by God, culminating in an eternal uplift for the steadfast.

Beneath the boundless blue, they bide their time,
With patient pleas to Christ, the sovereign Lord,
Their weary wills, renewed by strength sublime,
Shall soar on sturdy wings that storms afford.

In quiet trust, they lean on holy might,
Their souls, uplifted, pierce the peaceful sky,
With fearless flight, they cleave the daunting height,
And rise refreshed where mortal cares deny.

Relentless, they shall run through rugged lands,
Not faltering, nor faint, their footsteps free,
With wondrous power from His guiding hands,
They’ll wander wide, defying frailty’s plea.

For those who wait, His grace shall gently lift,
A steadfast, sacred, everlasting gift.

The poem, “The Gift of Another Day to Serve the Lord”, portrays sunrise and sunset as sacred moments to honor God. Dawn sparks joyful praise and a connection to His presence, while dusk brings grateful reflection for a day lived in faith. It frames each day as a divine gift for worship and service.

At sunrise, golden praise ascends anew,
Each dawn a hymn to greet the Lord’s embrace,
At sunset, twilight whispers gratitude,
A day well-lived within His boundless grace.

The sonnet “Christ’s Radiant Triumph” portrays a spiritual battle where the enemy (Satan) employs lies, death, and destruction to ensnare and ruin the soul, casting shadows over the love and grace of Jesus. Yet, amidst this darkness, Christ’s radiant light emerges as a powerful force, breaking through the enemy’s schemes with truth and transforming despair into joy. The poem culminates in a call to stand firm under Christ’s holy reign, rising in victory with the assurance that Satan’s power is defeated, celebrating the ultimate triumph of divine light and love over evil.

The enemy with cunning whispers lies,
To weave a web of doubt within the soul,
His words, like venom, bid the heart to die,
And tear apart what once was pure and whole.
With killing hands, he strikes at peace’s core,
A shadow cast where Jesus’ love had grown,
Destruction follows, ruthless evermore,
To dim the grace that once so brightly shone.
But Christ’s radiant light arises strong,
A flame of truth to shatter every ploy,
It breaks the dark where malice lingered long,
And turns despair to everlasting joy.
So stand, my friend, beneath His holy reign,
And rise triumphant, for Satan’s might is slain.

The sonnet “Held by Hands of Holy Might”, inspired by Psalm 62:5-7 (KJV)—”My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God”—conveys a profound trust in God as the sole source of hope and salvation. The speaker’s soul waits in silence, finding unshakable strength and refuge in God, portrayed as a rock, fortress, and shield against life’s storms. With divine might as a sustaining force, the poem celebrates a peace that illuminates freedom amidst chaos, affirming the speaker’s steadfast confidence in God’s protective care.

My soul in silence waits for God alone,
From Him my hope and expectation springs,
He is my rock, my fortress, and my throne,
A shield to guard me from all earthly stings.
Unshaken I shall stand through storm and strife,
For in His strength my wavering heart is stilled,
My refuge sure, my glory, and my life,
With holy might my spirit He has filled.
No force can move me from His steadfast care,
Salvation shines where peace has gently grown,
The rock of ages keeps me in His prayer,
My trust reposed in hands of living God.
So let the tempests rage, the shadows flee—
In Him alone my soul finds liberty.

Even So Come Quickly by Debbie Harris

The voice of truth proclaims with steady might,
“Surely I come, and soon,” the Savior calls,
A word that pierces through the endless night,
To echo loud through hope-filled hearts and halls.
The royal saints redeemed now lift their gaze,
A dawn of grace to call saints to their place,
For in His pledge lies all eternity,
A hope that quickens every longing heart.
The earth itself awaits His promised tread,
Each breath a prayer to lift the saints I love,
When righteousness shall raise the humbled head,
And love shall reign in everlasting peace.
Amen, we cry, with faith both deep and true,
Come, Lord, and lead us forth in triumph new.
