The poem “Hymn of the Breaking Day” celebrates the dawn as a symphony of birdsong, where sparrows, finches, cardinals, robins, wrens, blackbirds, and warblers blend their voices in a melodic awakening. As sunlight touches the earth, their chorus transforms the silence of night into a vibrant hymn, symbolizing the Creator’s praise and the day’s rebirth, culminating in a sacred song from the Creator’s embrace.

The dawn unspools its golden gleam,
A chorus stirs the fading dream.
Through misty leaves, the birds ascend,
Their symphony begins to bend.

The sparrow pipes a sprightly tune,
The finch replies beneath the moon.
The cardinal glows with crimson call,
A soaring note to lift us all.

The robin spins a silken lay,
The wrens let ripples dance and play.
Each wingbeat hums through waking skies,
A melody where beauty lies.

The trees sway soft, their branches sing,
A stage for every fluttering wing.
The blackbird pours a velvet plea,
The warbler threads sweet filigree.

Their voices weave, entwine, and soar,
A song the night could not restore.
As sunlight gilds the dewy earth,
Their anthem hails the day’s rebirth.

The world awakes in lilting grace,
A hymn from our Creator’s embrace.

South Carolina, My Home: A Tribute by Debbie Harris

The sonnet celebrates the natural and cultural beauty of South Carolina, the speaker’s cherished home state. It begins with the coastal allure of Myrtle Beach, where sandy shores and breezes create a welcoming scene. It then moves to the Lowcountry, with its historic oaks and slow rivers, and Charleston, where past and present intertwine. The poem shifts to the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains, adorned with laurel and deep valleys, showcasing nature’s splendor. The final couplet expresses the speaker’s deep, personal bond to South Carolina, a “gem” whose charm captivates their soul forever.

The shores of Carolina stretch in grace,
Where waves caress the sands with tender care,
Myrtle’s green arms enfold a warm embrace,
And salt-kissed winds dance freely through the air.

The Lowcountry whispers tales of old,
Through moss-draped oaks and rivers winding slow,
In Charleston’s streets, where history’s told,
The past and present in sweet union grow.

The Blue Ridge rises, bold against the sky,
A painter’s dream of peaks and valleys deep,
With blooms of laurel catching every eye,
Nature’s wild heart in quiet beauty sleeps.

Oh, South Carolina, gem so fair and free,
Thy charm doth bind my grateful soul to thee.

Sonnet: “For This Corruptible Must Put On Incorruption, And This Mortal Must Put On Immortality” by Debbie Harris

Based on I Corinthians 15:53 (KJV)

When mortal flesh ascends to glorious might,
Beneath a vault where stars in splendor blaze,
The eyes, reborn, drink deep of boundless sights,
A realm unveiled to everlasting gaze.

The mountains bow, their peaks in golden flame,
Oceans unfurl, their depths a jeweled expanse,
Each hue ignites, too vast for words to name,
A world remade in beauty’s fierce advance.

The winds bear songs no living ear could claim,
Through endless skies, the hosts of light parade,
Time’s curtain parts, all history aflame,
A radiant host in endless ranks arrayed.

And there we stand, with vision crowned anew,
To see the boundless sights immortality reveals.

The poem expresses that through Jesus Christ, believers are made whole and complete. It highlights themes of redemption through His sacrifice, the sufficiency of His grace, and the fulfillment found in faith. The sonnet contrasts the fleeting pleasures of the world with the lasting peace and unity offered in Christ, emphasizing that His love and truth satisfy all needs. It concludes with a call to follow Him, affirming that in Jesus, we find eternal satisfaction and purpose.

In Him we stand, a vessel fully wrought,
Complete in grace, no lack within our soul,
The Son of God, by blood our lives were bought,
His boundless love has made the broken whole.

No shadowed void remains where faith abides,
His light has filled the chasms of our need,
The cross, our bridge, where mercy’s tide resides,
In Christ alone we find our joy decreed.

The world may offer fleeting, frail delight,
Yet in His truth, our hearts are firmly set,
A holy union, sealed by heaven’s might,
No debt unpaid, no promise left unmet.

So let us rise, with Jesus as our guide,
In Him, forever, we are satisfied.

The sonnet celebrates the exhilarating renewal of spring as a divine act of Christ, brimming with vivid imagery and fragrances. It paints an earth bursting into life with emerald hills, golden daffodils, cherry blossoms, and bowing hyacinths, all swept by a fragrant breeze of lilac, honeysuckle, and fresh soil. Sunlit streams and fluttering butterflies join nature’s chorus, reflecting a season of redemption and glory that mirrors Christ’s triumph over death. The poem captures the excitement of this awakening as a testament to His eternal promise, blending sensory richness with spiritual reverence.

The earth awakes with Christ’s triumphant call,
A verdant hymn unfurls o’er hill and vale,
Where golden daffodils in rapture sprawl,
And cherry blossoms blush through morning’s gale.
The air, a canvas thick with lilac’s breath,
Entwines with soil’s dark scent, reborn and free,
A breeze divine, defying winter’s death,
Whispers renewal through each budding tree.

Hyacinths bow, their purple heads in praise,
While streams reflect the sun’s exultant gleam,
A fragrant dance of honeysuckle sways,
And butterflies paint life’s eternal theme.
In spring’s embrace, His glory richly grows,
A season’s grace where redemption flows.

Steed Of The Savior’s Hand by Debbie Harris

The sonnet celebrates the exquisite beauty of a horse crafted by Jesus, depicted through rich imagery. Its golden mane flows like dawn’s fire, its twilight-hued coat shimmers with heavenly dew, and sapphire veins pulse with life. The horse’s hooves blend thunder and gentleness, while its deep, starlit eyes reflect Christ’s eternal light. A divine creation, it embodies Jesus’ love and artistry, standing as a vision of grace and splendor.

From Jesus’ palms, a steed of splendor springs,
Its mane a cascade, molten gold aflame,
Each strand a thread of dawn the morning sings,
A silken fire no mortal hand could tame.
Its coat, a tapestry of twilight’s hue,
Gleams soft as velvet kissed by heaven’s dew,
Through veins like rivers, sapphire pulses brew,
A living hymn to grace forever new.
Hooves carve the air with strokes of thunder’s art,
Yet gentle as the mist on lilies lies,
Eyes deep as seas where stars and shadows part,
Reflect the light of Him who never dies.
So stands this horse, a vision wrought above,
A sculpted dream of Jesus’ boundless love.

The trumpets blaze with golden notes on high,
A fanfare echoes through the boundless skies,
Where regal banners lift toward realms unseen,
Proclaiming Christ, the Lord of all that flies.

His crown outshines the stars in midnight’s reign,
His scepter parts the chaos with a word,
The heavens bow, the oceans sing His name,
A symphony no mortal ear has heard.

The cherubim in ceaseless chorus call,
The seraphim with wings of flame adore,
While kings of earth cast down their fleeting thrall,
To kneel before the One forevermore.

Eternal King, Your triumph fills the air,
A royal hymn of love beyond compare.

With Sovereign Love of Infinite Renown, He Hails the Lost with Victor’s Crown by Debbie Harris

Upon the hills where twilight’s shadows creep,
A shepherd roamed, his flock of ninety-nine
Secure in fold, yet one had slipped the line—
A wayward lamb lost deep in crags so steep.
Through brambles sharp and winds that wailed with might,
He trod the wild, his staff a guiding star,
Past echoing vales and streams that stretched afar,
His voice a beacon piercing endless night.

The heavens watched, their silver eyes aglow,
As o’er the cliffs he bore the trembling stray,
Its wool like snow against his mantle’s sway—
A kingly burden crowned with love to show.
Rejoice, he cried, for what was lost is found,
The one restored makes heaven’s joy abound.
