A Note from the Poet

Dear Reader,

We live in a world full of critics, slanderers, and gossips—people quick to tear down, slow to build up, and often more interested in finding fault than in offering grace. In such a climate, it is easy to become cautious, silent, or even cynical. Yet the God who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is none of these things. He is an encourager. He builds up. He speaks truth, but He speaks it in love.

This poem is a simple reminder and a gentle question. If the Triune God encourages us, are we becoming the kind of people who encourage others—with truth that does not flatter, and with love that does not wound carelessly? The world already has enough voices that tear down. It needs more who will build up.

May these lines help you hear His encouragement afresh, and then pass it on.

With hope,

The Poet

Analysis of the Poem’s Format

The poem is written in heroic couplets: pairs of rhyming lines in iambic pentameter (roughly ten syllables per line with a da-DUM rhythm). This is a classical English form long used for serious reflection, argument, and moral or spiritual teaching.

The couplet structure gives the poem a steady, measured pace. Each pair of lines can complete a thought, while the rhyme quietly reinforces the ideas. The form is formal enough to carry theological weight, yet clear and readable. The final unrhymed question breaks the pattern slightly, leaving the reader with an open, personal challenge rather than a closed conclusion.

2 Corinthians 1:3–4
Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

John 14:16
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever.

Ephesians 4:15
But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ.

1 Thessalonians 5:11
Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.

Our Triune God builds up His people still,
from life within, according to His will.
Encouragement is not a duty done,
but who He is — the Father, Spirit, Son.

The Father speaks and worlds begin to be;
He names the Son Beloved from eternity.
The same word rests on us with steady grace:
“Beloved child, held fast in My embrace.”
He finishes the work His hands began
and carries all His children as a Man.

The Son walks down the road of human pain,
sits with the weary, speaks and calms the strain.
He touches outcasts, feeds the hungry weak,
and on the cross He bears the load we seek.
He rises, and His promise still is true:
“I am with you — come, follow what I do.”

The Spirit comes, the Comforter and Friend,
to strengthen hearts and make the broken mend.
He gives the words when ours have failed and died,
and groans with us where language cannot guide.
Through every gift the Body grows in love,
until it reaches fullness from above.

And then the question rises, calm and clear:
Are we encouragers who draw souls near?
Do we speak belonging where rejection fell?
Do we walk toward the lonely, lost, and ill?
Do we remain beside them, firm and true,
as He has stayed and been a Friend to you?

We will not trade the truth of Scripture’s word
for empty praise or flattery preferred.
True encouragement will speak the Word in full,
both what corrects and what can make us whole.

The God of love does more than merely call;
He joins us to His work and gives us all.
He builds us up that we may build in turn,
so others rise and of His kindness learn.

The question stands, both merciful and true:
Are we encouragers who speak the truth in love like our Triune God?
